In our last blog post, we shared the colors of the year from various paint companies (missed it? click here). But what will be the hot interior design trends for 2023? We scoured the internet for what designers are saying will be big in ’23, and here are some of the trends cited by many.

Eco-Conscious/Sustainable Design

Natural design and designs in harmony with nature have been “in” for a few years now, and that is not expected to change in 2023. Look for more organic and natural materials to be trendy in design. Greener designs are also going to continue to be hot with people leaning towards more sustainable materials like wool, cotton, bamboo, linoleum, and cork in everything from flooring to furniture and textiles to building materials.

Holistic Design

With the chaos of the last few years, many people are looking for spaces that are good for their mind and body. In 2023, designers expect homeowners to consider how designs can make them feel happier, healthier, and more productive. That will include things like looking at the way color affects moods and choosing color palettes based off that and how lighting impacts both mood and productivity.

Anything Cozy

Tying into the need for comforting spaces, cozy and comfortable furniture and textiles will be hot in 2023. Look for inviting textiles and textures, including anything soft to the touch (think velvet or mohair).

Bolder Design Choices

While people want to be comfortable, they are also willing to take some more risks with designs to add character to their spaces. Rich, saturated colors such as deep reds, browns, and greens are predicted to be very trendy in the coming year, as is darker wood tones. Bright wallpaper will likely be a choice of many, and bolder designs such as floor to ceiling wall color will pop up more and more.

Multi-Purpose Interiors

Though many are returning to office spaces, the lessons of Work from Home and other measures taken during COVID rubbed off and continue. Rather than looking at a space with rigid definitions of the past, people are looking for flexibility to make a space truly work for them. For example, a kitchen doesn’t just have to be a kitchen. It can be a great entertaining space or their can be space carved out for a homework/work station.

Repurposing Spaces and Furniture

People are also looking to creatively repurpose areas that they either aren’t actively using or that aren’t really working as intended. One example of this is a designer who used an under-staircase area to create a bar area.

The repurposing trend also extends to furniture. It may be repurposing something you already own or going to a thrift store to find something new to you and reworking it with upholstery, paint, etc. This may become even more popular in 2023 as costs and some challenges with finding items continues to be issues.

At-Home Oasis

Travel is starting to pick back up, but people aren’t content to just leave their vacation as a memory. Many are bringing items back from travels to use in their home design or looking to their vacation destinations for color inspiration in their homes. This gives them a vacation-like space without ever leaving home.
