Smart technology is definitely one of the hottest home trends. Everything from doorbells and cameras to major appliances like fridges now have smart options. If you are looking to make your home a little smarter, it can be overwhelming trying to decide which smart options to add. Here are five options that are pretty simple additions that, in most cases, you can do yourself.
Thermostat
One of the easiest and most popular smart devices available is a smart thermostat. Not only will it make your home, well, smarter, but it very likely saves you money as well. According to experts, you can save roughly $140 to $180 per year by switching to a smart thermostat, which can be controlled from your smartphone and may learn your habits and adjusts automatically. Some can even monitor your HVAC system and alert you if issues arise and need repair.
There are many options available, including several that qualify for rebates with Rocky Mountain Power and Dominion Energy. Before buying, you will definitely want to do your research, not only for rebates but to ensure you get a thermostat that is compatible with the wiring and HVAC unit in your home. If you are thinking about installing it on your own, you may also want to research what it takes to install the thermostat in advance so you are prepared. Many manufacturers have videos that will give you all the details. One thing to keep in mind when thinking about DIY vs. professional is we are talking about your heating and air system, which you don’t want to disable or ruin. If you have any doubts about your ability to do the install properly, it may be worth the extra money to hire someone.
Cameras/Doorbell
Nothing is more important than the safety and security of your home, and one of the easiest ways to enhance that is with video. There are many options for cameras, including wireless and outdoor options, and a video doorbell is almost a necessity nowadays. Both cameras and smart doorbells are pretty straightforward to install, so you should be able to handle this on your own. However, if you are creating a large system and/or tying into an alarm system, you may want to consider hiring a pro to handle the install and setup.
Lighting
Going out of town for the weekend and want lights to come on and off automatically? Hate coming home to a dark home in the winter? Then smart lighting is definitely for you! Best of all, the options out there are basically plug and play, making it super easy to do on your own. One option is smart bulbs, which simply need to be screwed into an existing light fixture and connected to a hub. Many can be controlled from your smartphone, including setting up programming, and some change colors, allowing you to create different moods for holidays or special occasions. Another option for lamps (not to mention other plug-in appliances) are smart outlets. These smart devices plug simply into your existing outlet, then once connected to your WiFi, you can control any lamp or appliance that is plugged into it with an app. You can turn items on and off or you can set up schedules for them to turn on and off automatically. A third option is smart switches, which replace your traditional ones and can be controlled by an app. If you are considering a smart switch, make sure you do your research. You need to make sure you get one compatible with the wiring in your home. Replacing a switch will also require more work on your end, so you’ll want to make sure you’re comfortable with the electrical work involved or hire someone who is.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Regular smoke and carbon monoxide detectors do the job needed and are great for all homes, but if you want to improve on these necessary home items, look at smart options. Smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors send clearer warnings both from the device and to your smartphone on what is happening in your home. Many of the smart detectors have voice alerts that clearly tell you if the unit has a low battery or if it is actually detecting smoke or carbon monoxide in your home, plus it will send those alerts to your phone, so you know what is going on even if you are not home. Some may even let you know the specific room where smoke or carbon monoxide is being detected, and others may include emergency lights that will help guide you out of a smoke-filled room. Smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are relatively inexpensive and not any harder than installing a standard detector.
Sprinkler Controller
You’ve probably heard all the talk about the drought situation and lack of water. One great way to help with that is adding a smart sprinkler controller to your home. A smart controller helps prevent water waste, which in turn helps save money. In addition to allowing you to schedule your sprinklers as you do with a normal controller, a smart one also allows you to turn sprinklers on and off remotely through an app. Handy, when there may be rain in the forecast, and you forgot to turn it off at home. Some use daily weather reports to adjust timing of sprinklers and how much water to use each day (note: controllers with this function may have an additional monthly fee). If you are looking for a smart controller, look for one with EPA WaterSense certification that has the number of zones in your sprinkler system. If your timer is outside, you’ll need one that is waterproof as well. When it comes to install, much like other items on this list, you will likely be able to do it if you are a bit handy and are careful during installation. But, again, if you have any reservations about the install, it is better to spend a little extra money for a professional install.
One bonus tip on smart home technology: Many of the items mentioned can be used with a smart hub, such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa devices. If you have one of these in your home, you may want to consider compatibility as you research and purchase smart items.
