With temperatures starting to cool, particularly in the evenings and overnight, a backyard fire pit may be on your radar. There are many great options to purchase, but if you want something a little more customized, you can make one on your own. A simple Google and YouTube search shows there are many videos and blogs that can help you do it yourself, but one we found that is easy to do and doesn’t require a lot of materials is Better Homes & Gardens’ How to Make an Easy Firepit in a Weekend.

Below are the basic step-by-step instructions for the firepit, and BH&G’s video. In addition to this option, BH&G has another very similar DIY firepit on the blog here.

BH&G’s DIY Backyard Fire Pit:

  1. Mark the center of your desired circle using a stake
  2. Attach a string and spray paint to the stake and mark the circle outline
  3. Dig a 5-inch deep hole
  4. Fill the pit with 6 inches of gravel
  5. Rake, smooth, and tamp down the gravel. When done tamping, make sure the area is level. If not, keep working until it is.
  6. Add a fire ring to the center of the circle
  7. Place the first row of retaining-wall units in a circle around the fire ring, and use a mallet to set them in place. Make sure units are level before moving on to next layer.
  8. Add the second row of retaining-wall units, attaching them with adhesive.
  9. Repeat with additional rows until you are almost to the top of the fire ring.
  10. Attach finishing top pieces with adhesive.
  11. Add lava rock to the bottom of the fire ring, and you’re ready to enjoy your backyard fire pit!
