Now is the time for home maintenance and prep for the coming winter.  Here are our suggestions for keeping your home safe and cozy for the snowy weather ahead.

TIGHTEN UP!
Re-caulking and weatherstripping windows and doors are quick, easy fixes for air leaks.  Start your home maintenance by checking window and door frames for spots where air may be sneaking in and seal them up.  How do you know when to add caulk vs. weatherstripping?  Caulk is used between two surfaces that don’t move; weatherstripping seals gaps between movable surfaces.  Check out this Liberty Homes video to learn more about adjusting your threshold to keep cold air from sneaking under your front door.

CLEAN UP!
Don’t let clogged gutters damage your roof or rain gutter system!  Grab some gloves, a trash bag, and a pressure spout for the hose and you’re ready to go.  Be safe!  If you’re not comfortable on a ladder, hire a pro to take care of this important job for you.

CHECK UP!
We’re having some serious wind here in the Salt Lake Valley, so now is a great time to inspect your roof for missing or damaged shingles and get them replaced.

FIRE UP!
Of course, you’re already changing your HVAC air filter on your on a monthly basis (nudge, nudge).  Consider having your heating system professionally tuned and serviced before Old Man Winter comes to visit.  As for that air filter…

CLOSE UP!
You really don’t want winter’s chill to crack your sprinkler system.  Drain the system and shut it off for the season before water in the lines has a chance to freeze.

TRIM UP!
Wet, heavy snow could quickly overwhelm dead tree branches.  Cut back any damaged or dead limbs and be sure to trim any branches that hang over your home, garage, shed, etc.  October snow is common here, so get those trees trimmed soon!
